What Is Discharge Printing? The Softest Screen Print You Can Get
If you have ever picked up a vintage band tee and noticed the print feels like it is part of the fabric — no raised ink, no plastic feel, just smooth cotton with color — that is discharge printing. It is one of the best-kept secrets in custom apparel, and at French Press Custom, it is one of our most requested techniques.
How Discharge Printing Works
Unlike standard screen printing (where ink sits on top of the fabric), discharge printing uses a chemical agent that removes the dye from the fabric and replaces it with a new color in a single step.
The Process
- A discharge agent (typically formaldehyde-free) is mixed with pigment
- The mixture is screen printed onto the garment like regular ink
- During the curing process (conveyor dryer at 320-330 degrees F), the discharge agent activates
- The original dye in the fabric is chemically removed
- The pigment simultaneously bonds to the now-undyed fibers
- The result: color that lives inside the fabric, not on top of it
The Result
The printed area feels exactly like unprinted fabric. Zero hand feel. Zero raised texture. The design appears to be woven into the shirt.
Why Choose Discharge Printing?
1. Unmatched Softness
This is the number one reason. If you run your hand across a discharge print and the surrounding fabric, you cannot feel the difference. The print is the fabric.
2. Vintage Aesthetic
Discharge prints have a slightly muted, vintage quality that is impossible to replicate with plastisol. The edges are slightly soft, the colors are rich but not neon, and the whole effect feels lived-in from day one.
3. Breathability
Because there is no layer of ink sitting on the fabric, discharge-printed areas breathe just like unprinted fabric. This matters for athletic and warm-weather apparel.
4. No Cracking
Plastisol ink can crack after many washes. Discharge prints cannot crack because there is no ink layer to break. The color is literally part of the fiber.
5. Premium Perception
Customers recognize and value the soft hand feel. Merch brands, streetwear labels, and premium corporate clients all choose discharge for this reason.
Limitations of Discharge Printing
Only Works on Certain Fabrics
Discharge removes dye, which means it only works on dyed fabrics — typically 100% cotton. It does not work on:
- White garments (nothing to discharge)
- Polyester (the dye chemistry is different)
- Many poly-cotton blends
The best results come from ringspun cotton garments in medium to dark colors — think navy, black, forest green, maroon.
Color Results Can Vary
The discharged area returns to the natural fiber color (usually off-white or cream), then the pigment tints it. Results can vary slightly between:
- Different garment dyes (reactive vs fiber-reactive)
- Different garment brands
- Different colorways
We always recommend a test print for exact color matching.
Limited Color Vibrancy
Discharge colors are rich and beautiful, but they are not neon-bright like plastisol. If you need electric colors that pop from across a room, plastisol is better.
Slightly Higher Cost
Discharge ink costs more than standard plastisol, and the curing process requires more precision. Expect a $0.50-1.00 per color upcharge compared to standard screen printing.
Discharge vs Other Soft Print Methods
| Method | Softness | Color Vibrancy | Works On | Cost | |--------|----------|---------------|----------|------| | Discharge | 10/10 | 7/10 | Dark cotton | $$$ | | Water-based | 8/10 | 8/10 | Light cotton | $$ | | DTG | 8/10 | 9/10 | Cotton | $$ | | Plastisol | 4/10 | 10/10 | Anything | $ |
