Merch impact calculator

A Stanley/Stella Creator 2.0 t-shirt in a dyed color accounts for 2.28 kg CO2e and 1.09 m³ of water from cradle to factory gate, by Stanley/Stella's own lifecycle figures. This calculator multiplies the published figures for 36 styles by your quantity, so you see an order's footprint before you buy.

02  Color variant

Stanley/Stella publishes different figures for dyed, heather and undyed colors of the same style. Size does not change them.

About 1,495 miles of driving an average gasoline car, cradle to grave (835 miles cradle to gate).EPA: 393 g CO2e per mile.

80,646 US gallons of water over the garments' life, roughly 269 days of an average American family's home water use.EPA WaterSense: more than 300 gallons a day, so read this as an upper bound.

Lower option: the same style in Natural Raw (undyed) cuts cradle-to-gate carbon by 20% and water by 39% in Stanley/Stella's data.

Method

Where the numbers come from

Every per-garment figure comes from Stanley/Stella's product data feed (fields CarbonEmissionGate, WaterUsageGate, CarbonEmissionGrave and WaterUsageGrave), pulled on 2026-11-02. We matched the units against their Creator 2.0 product page, which shows the same 2.28 kg CO2e and 1.09 m³ for a dyed color and defines carbon as kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Cradle to gate runs from raw material sourcing through every production step and upstream transport to the garment factory gate. Cradle to grave adds downstream transport, decoration, use by the wearer and disposal or recycling. Both definitions are Stanley/Stella's. Their company-wide approach is on their life cycle assessment page.

The figures change with the color variant (dyed, heather, undyed Natural Raw), not with size, so the calculator lets you pick the variant. Order totals are the per-garment figure times quantity.

Equivalents use two EPA figures: 393 g CO2e per mile for an average gasoline passenger car (EPA equivalencies references) and more than 300 gallons of water a day used at home by an average American family (EPA WaterSense). We do not compare against conventional cotton because Stanley/Stella does not publish a per-garment baseline for it.

No figures published yet for: Asher, Chaser, Chaser Vintage, Creator 2.0 Vintage, Easer Vintage, Former, Sculpter, Shopping Bag 2.0, Stella Tessa, Tote Bag. They are left out of the calculator rather than estimated.

Questions

Impact, answered

What is the carbon footprint of a Stanley/Stella t-shirt?

Stanley/Stella publishes 2.28 kg CO2e per Creator 2.0 t-shirt in a dyed color from cradle to factory gate, and 4.08 kg CO2e from cradle to grave. The undyed Natural Raw color is 1.83 kg CO2e cradle to gate. Figures differ by style and color variant, not by size.

What do cradle to gate and cradle to grave mean?

Cradle to gate covers raw material sourcing, every production step and upstream transport up to the garment factory gate. Cradle to grave adds downstream transport, decoration, use by the wearer and disposal or recycling. Those are Stanley/Stella's own definitions on their product pages.

What units are these figures in?

Carbon is in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2e) per garment. Water is in cubic meters (m³) per garment; one cubic meter is 1,000 liters. We checked both against the figures Stanley/Stella shows on its own Creator 2.0 product page.

Is this compared with a conventional cotton t-shirt?

No. Stanley/Stella does not publish a per-garment conventional cotton baseline, so we do not show one. The only comparison here is inside their own data: the undyed Natural Raw version of a style against its dyed colors.

Does the number include printing?

The cradle-to-grave figure includes a decoration step as Stanley/Stella modelled it. It is not a measurement of our screen printing, DTG, DTF or embroidery run, and the cradle-to-gate figure covers the blank garment only.

Can I order these styles decorated?

Yes. French Press Custom is an official Stanley/Stella dealer in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Use "Quote this order" in the calculator and the style and quantity carry into the quote form.
