DTF Printing Explained: Everything You Need to Know

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and for good reason. It offers a unique combination of versatility, quality, and affordability that fills gaps left by traditional screen printing and DTG. At French Press Custom, we have integrated DTF into our production lineup to give our clients more options.

Here is what you need to know about this game-changing technology.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. Unlike DTG (which prints directly onto fabric) or screen printing (which pushes ink through mesh), DTF prints a design onto a special PET film, which is then transferred to the garment using heat and pressure.

How DTF Works (Step by Step)

  1. Print the design — A modified inkjet printer prints your artwork in CMYK + white ink onto a clear PET film
  2. Apply adhesive powder — Hot-melt powder is applied to the wet ink and excess is shaken off
  3. Cure the powder — The film passes through a curing oven to melt the powder into a smooth adhesive layer
  4. Transfer to garment — The film is placed on the garment and pressed with a heat press at 300-330 degrees F for 15-20 seconds
  5. Peel the film — The film is peeled away (hot or cold peel), leaving the design bonded to the fabric

The result is a full-color, highly durable print that works on virtually any fabric.

DTF vs Screen Printing vs DTG

| Feature | DTF | Screen Printing | DTG | |---------|-----|-----------------|-----| | Colors | Unlimited | Per-screen cost | Unlimited | | Fabric types | Any | Any | Cotton preferred | | Feel | Slightly raised | Varies by ink type | Soft, absorbed | | Durability | Very good | Excellent | Good | | Best quantity | 1-200 | 24+ | 1-50 | | Setup cost | None | $25/screen | None | | Detail level | Excellent | Good | Excellent | | White ink | Built in | Requires extra screen | Built in |

Advantages of DTF Printing

1. Works on Any Fabric

DTF is fabric-agnostic. Cotton, polyester, nylon, spandex, tri-blends, denim — if you can heat press it, you can DTF it. This is a massive advantage over DTG, which is primarily limited to cotton.

2. No Minimum Orders

Like DTG, DTF has no setup costs. You can print a single shirt or a thousand. This makes it perfect for:

  • Samples and prototypes
  • Small batch custom orders
  • Testing new designs before committing to screen printing

3. Vibrant Colors on Any Garment Color

DTF prints include a white ink layer automatically, which means your colors pop equally well on black, navy, red, or white garments. No separate underbase screen needed.

4. Excellent Detail

DTF can reproduce fine text, gradients, and photographic detail with high accuracy. It handles complexity that would require expensive simulated process screen printing.

5. Pre-Printable Transfers

DTF transfers can be printed and stored. This means:

  • We can pre-print transfers and apply them on demand
  • Faster turnaround for rush orders
  • Inventory transfers for popular designs
  • Gang multiple designs on one sheet for efficiency

6. Lower Cost Than DTG for Dark Garments

DTG on dark garments requires heavy pre-treatment and double the white ink. DTF achieves comparable or better results at lower cost for dark-colored apparel.

Limitations of DTF

1. Print Feel

DTF prints sit on top of the fabric rather than absorbing into it. The result is a slightly plasticky or rubbery feel compared to water-based screen printing or DTG. It is softer than vinyl but not as soft as discharge printing.

2. Not Ideal for Massive Runs

For 500+ units of the same design, screen printing will almost always be more cost-effective. DTF is best for short to medium runs.

3. Heat Sensitivity

DTF prints can be sensitive to very high heat. Iron-on re-pressing or high-temperature industrial laundering can damage the print.

4. Breathability

Because the print sits on top of the fabric, it can reduce breathability in the printed area. For athletic wear, this is worth considering.

DTF Pricing

DTF pricing at French Press Custom is based on print size and quantity:

| Print Size | 1-11 pcs | 12-24 pcs | 25-49 pcs | 50+ pcs | |-----------|----------|-----------|-----------|---------| | Small (4x4 in) | $8 | $6 | $5 | $4 | | Medium (8x10 in) | $12 | $9 | $7 | $5.50 | | Large (12x16 in) | $16 | $12 | $9 | $7 |

These are decoration costs only — add the blank garment cost for total per-unit pricing.

When to Choose DTF

Choose DTF when:

  • You need full-color prints on polyester or blended fabrics
  • Your order is under 100 pieces with complex multi-color artwork
  • You need fast turnaround without screen setup time
  • You are printing on dark-colored garments where DTG struggles
  • You want pre-printed transfers stored for on-demand application
  • You are doing one-off custom pieces like personalized gifts or samples

When NOT to Choose DTF

Skip DTF when:

  • You are ordering 200+ of the same design (screen printing is cheaper)
  • You want the softest possible hand feel (choose discharge or water-based screen printing)
  • You are printing all-over designs (sublimation is better for polyester)
  • You need maximum breathability (DTG or water-based screen printing)
