DTF beats DTG on Stanley/Stella for full color art on dark shirts, cotton and recycled polyester blends, and runs of 12 to 35 pieces. The transfer carries its own white layer, so it prints the same on any shirt color and works on almost any fabric. DTG still wins for 1 to 11 pieces and the softest feel on white.
We are an official Stanley/Stella dealer in Santa Fe Springs. The full range is on our Stanley/Stella hub.
What is DTF, and how is it different from DTG?
DTF (direct to film) prints your full color design onto a film, adds an adhesive powder, then heat presses the transfer onto the shirt. DTG (direct to garment) prints the ink straight into the fabric.
That one difference drives everything else:
- Shirt color. A DTF transfer carries its own white layer, so it prints the same on white, black or any color. DTG needs pretreat and a white underbase on dark shirts.
- Fabric. DTF works on almost any fabric, cotton blends and polyester included. DTG prints best on 100% cotton.
- Feel. DTG on a light shirt soaks into the cotton and has almost no layer on top. A DTF transfer sits on the surface as a thin, flexible film, so you can feel it, more so on large prints.
- Minimum. DTF starts at 12 pieces, because transfers are gang printed on a film sheet. DTG has no minimum.
DTF vs DTG on the Creator 2.0 at a glance
| DTF | DTG | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 12 pieces | None |
| White or Natural Raw shirt | Transfer with its own white layer | Ink soaks straight into the cotton |
| Black or French Navy shirt | Same result as on white | Pretreat and a white underbase first |
| Fabric | Almost any, blends and polyester included | Best on 100% cotton |
| Feel | Thin, flexible film on the surface | Softest on light shirts, almost no layer on top |
| Best for | Full color on dark shirts and blends, 12+ pieces | Samples, one-offs, soft prints on light cotton |
The Creator 2.0 is 100% organic ring spun combed cotton per Stanley/Stella's product data, so it takes both methods well. The choice comes down to shirt color, quantity and how you want the print to feel. Get an exact price for your quantity and print in our instant quote calculator.
Front, back and oversized prints
DTF can go on more than one location on the same shirt, and large transfers are available for oversized designs. Keep in mind that a big DTF transfer is a big piece of film, so you will feel a large print more than a small chest logo.
When does DTF beat DTG on Stanley/Stella?
1. Dark shirts. Black, French Navy and the other deep Stanley/Stella colors need pretreat and a white underbase for DTG. DTF does not, because the transfer brings its own white layer, so a full color design comes out the same on a black shirt as on a white one.
2. Cotton and recycled polyester blends. Stanley/Stella's product data lists the Cruiser 2.0 hoodie as 80% organic ring spun combed cotton and 20% recycled polyester, a 3-end brushed fleece with an organic cotton face. DTG prints best on 100% cotton, while DTF does not depend on the fiber mix. The Cruiser 2.0 is Stanley/Stella's heavyweight hoodie; its fabric weight is listed at 10.3 oz/yd².
3. Full color art at 12 to 35 pieces. Below our 36-piece screen printing minimum, DTF puts a multi-color design on a dark Stanley/Stella shirt with no screens.
4. Mixed shirt colors in one order. Because the transfer prints the same on any color, one design can go on white and black shirts in the same run and look consistent across both.
When is DTG still the better choice?
- 1 to 11 pieces. DTF starts at 12, DTG has no minimum. Samples and one-offs go DTG.
- The softest print on white or natural. On a 100% cotton Creator 2.0 in White or Natural Raw, DTG soaks in and leaves almost no feel. See DTG printing on Stanley/Stella shirts.
- Large, soft prints. A big DTF transfer is a big piece of film. If drape matters most, DTG on a light shirt keeps the shirt softer.
At 36 pieces and up with a few spot colors, compare screen printing too. Screen printing adds water-based and discharge inks that become part of the fabric instead of sitting on top. See why Stanley/Stella blanks print so well for screen printing.
How do you wash a DTF printed Stanley/Stella shirt?
Stanley/Stella's care data for the Creator 2.0 and Cruiser 2.0 is: machine wash cold (86°F), do not bleach, tumble dry low, iron low heat (230°F), do not dry clean. Keep the iron off the transfer itself.
Our take
As the Stanley/Stella dealer in Santa Fe Springs, serving Los Angeles and Orange County, we suggest DTF first for full color art on dark Stanley/Stella tees and hoodies from 12 to about 35 pieces, and for blends like the Cruiser 2.0. We keep DTG for samples, one-offs and soft full color prints on light cotton, and look at screen printing next to DTF once a design reaches 36 pieces or more, when a soft water-based or discharge print matters.

Frequently asked questions
Can you DTF print on Stanley/Stella shirts?
Yes. DTF works on Stanley/Stella tees and hoodies, including 100% cotton styles like the Creator 2.0 and cotton and recycled polyester blends like the Cruiser 2.0 hoodie. The minimum is 12 pieces.
Is DTF or DTG better on a black Stanley/Stella shirt?
For full color art at 12 pieces or more, DTF is usually the better fit. The transfer carries its own white layer, so it needs no pretreat. DTG on black still prints well, with more contrast, and it has no minimum.
Does a DTF print look different on different shirt colors?
No. A DTF transfer includes its own white layer, so the print comes out the same on white, black or any other color. DTG is the method that changes with shirt color, because dark shirts need pretreat and a white underbase.
Does a DTF print feel different from DTG?
Yes. A DTF transfer sits on the surface as a thin, flexible film, so you can feel it. DTG on a light cotton shirt soaks into the fibers and feels softer.
What is the minimum for DTF on Stanley/Stella?
12 pieces per order, because transfers are gang printed on a film sheet. For 1 to 11 pieces, use DTG, which has no minimum.
How long does a DTF order take?
About 2-3 weeks after art approval. Rush is available depending on the schedule, so tell us your date when you request a quote.
